Abstract

This study is developed within the field of algebraic thinking in elementary school. We worked with six second graders (7-8 years old) on a generalization task during individual semi-structured interview. We focused on the mediations of the researcher-teacher who guided these interviews. The research objective is to describe the generalization of the students before and after the mediations. The results highlight that, at the end of the interviews, all six students generalized, some of them correctly and others incompletely. We also identified that the mediations played a fundamental role in identifying the regularity of the task, allowing the students to correct errors and justify.
