Abstract

For a few years, one of the priorities of the competent centers in the field of Education was to implement a Bilingual Education Program at school. Physical Education was one of the subjects chosen by most centers for this purpose. In addition, leisure time of young people is changing towards a more passive way, and consequently their aim to do physical activity. The main aim of this study was to verify if the motivation of schoolchildren to do physical activity is different depending on the chosen study program. The health-oriented physical activity motivation questionnaire (EMAPS) was used in 330 Compulsory Secondary Education students from a center in the Region of Murcia (53% ordinary modality and 47% bilingual program). Better results were observed in the bilingual group in all the variables, although without significant differences except for the external regulation variable (p=0.03). Within the bilingual modality, the girls obtained better scores than the boys, also without significant differences. It is concluded that in both school programs the students have a high motivation towards the practice of health-oriented physical activity, being the girls of the bilingual modality the ones that present the greatest motivation.
