Abstract

Polarization by school ownership is one of the main features of the Spanish educational system.
Students enrolled in private schools tend to outperform students in public institutions, having
middle class students recently fled from the latter. This article reviews and analyzes the
determinants behind the public-private performance gap with the aim of elaborating reform
proposals aiming at its reduction.
