Abstract

In this presentation of the Special Issue on Statistics and Probability in Early Childhood Education we first review the contemporary panorama of research in early childhood mathematics education. Based on this review, we argue and characterise the teaching of statistics and probability from 3 years old: the purposes (what is it taught for? and why is it taught?), the practices (how is it taught?) and the organisation of teaching (when is it taught? and what is it taught?). It is concluded that the joint consideration of these dimensions contributes to the expansion and consolidation of the teaching of Statistics and Probability in Early Childhood Education.
