In this article we undertake a characterization of medical terminology from a translational perspective, taking as reference four aspects which, from our point of view, are characteristic of this fi eld of specialized terminology.
An attempt is made to illustrate each aspect with examples from professional practice in medical translation (from English into Spanish), and from different research projects on specialized terminology previously carried out by our research group.
Nevertheless, the study is more than a list and commentary of examples obtained from professional translation practice. We aim to offer a characterization that will enable us to contextualize difficulties related to the translation of medical terminology within the complex of social, methodological, scientific and cultural dimensions which characterize current research and practice of Medicine.
