About Theatre Retranslation: In Search of a (Re)definition

While the last two decades have seen significant progress in studies on literary retranslation, with proposed definitions and exploration of prompting factors, a noticeable gap exists in reflections on this phenomenon within theatrical translation. This gap extends to an examination of the textual and non-textual factors influencing the translation and staging of works previously translated (and probably performed) in a specific target culture.

This article theoretically investigates both the verbal —linguistic, translational— and non-verbal —-commercial, personal, ideological, performative— elements that influence the retranslation and reception of a particular play. The analysis underscores the necessity of formulating a definition of theatrical retranslation as distinct from literary retranslation that accounts for the unique peculiarities inherent in the dramatic genre.

Pioneering Interpreters and Translators in Alaska (19th and 20th Centuries)

Este trabajo de investigación se centra en el ejercicio pionero de traducción e interpretación realizado en Alaska durante los siglos XIX-XX. En primer lugar, presentamos los antecedentes históricos sobre la investigación historiográfica, así como la metodología y estructura del trabajo; posteriormente analizamos desde el punto de vista de la traducción y la historia la zona en la que se realiza el estudio, Alaska. Nuestro objetivo ha sido el de sacar a la luz la vida de aquellos hombres y mujeres que se convirtieron en pioneros de la mediación lingüística en este territorio. La historiografía de la traducción en Alaska no había recibido hasta ahora ninguna atención, es por esta razón que hemos considerado pertinente la realización de un trabajo de estas características. Los resultados de nuestra investigación nos demuestran el gran papel realizado por las mujeres autóctonas en estas actividades de mediación.

Translation as a Ubiquitous Category in Philosophy. In Search of a Translation Theory Within Byung Chul Han’s Works

In an outward-gazing exercise such as those suggested within the framework of the outward turn by Bassnett and Johnston, in this study we connect translation studies and philosophy. Informed by new realism and metamodernism, and through an interdisciplinary approach, we attempt to prove that, if translation is a ubiquitous phenomenon, it will also be present in the works by Byung Chul Han. To that purpose, we carry out an analysis of primary (works by Han) and secondary (book reviews, critiques, and interviews) sources to outline the translational nature of some of the categories within Han’s philosophical system (original/copy, absence/presence, hyperculture, etc.), while examining its inherent contradictions. We also come to pinpoint two separate periods within Han’s work: a first stage more oblivious to the domestic/foreign binary, and a second stage ethically favouring alterity and leading towards the assertion that a universal cultural hospitality is necessary.

Paremiology and Translation: Addressing Cognitive Challenges in Translator Training

This study deals with the integration of paremiological conceptual frameworks in translator training, focusing on the comprehension and translation of paremies from Russian into Spanish. Hence, it aims to explore how the application of specific paremiological conceptual schemes improves the transposition of cultural and semantic meanings in the translation process. In this context, the objective of this study was to analyse the effectiveness of paremiological conceptual schemes in translator training, using a methodology based on a series of cognitive strategies, highlighting their influence on the comprehension and accurate transfer of Russian paremies into Spanish. To this end, a cognitive methodology was chosen, combining a theoretical and a practical part with 40 Russian students that were taking a Masters in translation. After obtaining and evaluating the results, the research shows that the integration of paremiological conceptual frameworks significantly improves translators’ ability to cope with the cognitive challenges of translating paremies.

The Translation of Terms Referring to Food and Gastronomy in Two Arabic Versions of Don Quixote

Eating habits are a set of traits capable of differentiating not only the various cultures from each other, but also the different social groups within them. The translation of the terms related to these habits would pose a series of difficulties. Our aim is to analyze the translation quality and the type of problems that would arise when transferring the words referring to food and gastronomy in Don Quixote. We analyze two Arabic versions: those of Badawī (1965) and al-‘Aṭṭār (2002). The analysis reveals that the translation of referential content, well reflected in both versions, poses fewer problems than inferential one. Al-‘Aṭṭār introduces certain improvements in the transfer of both the referential content and -to a lesser extent- the inferential one. He also presents a version with a simpler style. We believe that both features would justify the publication of this second full Egyptian translation of Don Quixote.

Interpretation and Innovation of Otherness in Liljana Arsovska’s Literary Translation

The relationship between the “self” and the “other” has been the core of postcolonial discourse and is receiving a lot of attention in the field of translation. Liljana Arsovska is a privileged sinologist at El Colegio de -Mexico. She has translated numerous modern Chinese novels and has made notable contributions to the overseas dissemination of Chinese literature. Arsovska is convinced that the “otherness” makes Chinese literature own its flavor. In her view, conveying the colored foreign elements to Spanish-speaking readers is a tremendous challenge. To achieve this Arsovska adopts different translation strategies while providing her creative interpretation of the heterogeneity of Chinese literature. The aim of this article is to uncover the circumstances and reasons for her translation choices.

The English-Spanish Translation of Gender in Feminist Art: the Case of the Guerrilla Girls at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo

The high number of museums and contemporary art galleries in Spain entails the translation of foreign artworks to allow linguistic accessibility and inclusion. In the case of the 2020 Guerrilla Girls exhibition at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo of Seville, artists’ posters were translated into Spanish in an extensive leaflet. In this paper gender transfer into Spanish of this leaflet is analysed considering the feminist and verbal nature of the exhibition. To do so, inclusive language strategies of Spanish official linguistic guides and von Flotow’s feminist translation techniques are applied. The results prove the museum’s awareness of the importance of the visibility of women in the artistic discourse of Guerrilla Girls as well as the need to improve some of the strategies used to unify the narrative of the official leaflet.

Am I Capable of Translating a Specialized Text from Spanish to English? An Exploratory Study on Translation Students’ Self-Efficacy Beliefs

Self-efficacy beliefs can impact the translation process; however, the effect of these beliefs on the quality of translations remains unclear. This study aims to determine the effect of self-efficacy beliefs on the quality of inverse translations done by translation students at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. The Haro-Soler -Translator Self-Efficacy Beliefs Scale (2018, 2022a) was applied along with a translation test that was graded based on a classification of translation errors. While statistical analysis indicates no significant relationship between the variables, the results reveal a slight tendency towards an inversely proportional relationship between participants' self-efficacy beliefs and the quality of their translations. This preliminary study introduces a variable not extensively explored in prior research: translation quality, and it contributes two specialized instruments to the field of translation.

Orality in the Subtitling of Linguistically and Culturally Marked Fictional Products

The reduction of orality markers is one of the most common strategies used in subtitling. The article deals with the problem of translating prefabricated orality in linguistically and culturally marked fictional products. For this purpose, we analyze a parallel bilingual corpus consisting of two original Italian series, Romanzo criminale and Suburra, which are similar in terms of the subject matter and varieties of language used, and their corresponding subtitled versions into Peninsular Spanish. We also examine whether the temporal distance between two series analyzed, as well as the different broadcasting format and distribution channel used —DVD and streaming platform respectively— have had an impact on the preservation or standardization of orality markers in the subtitles. The results show no significant changes in the patterns applied in both products, where traditional subtitling conventions and strategies prevail.

Worth Studying: The Dubbing of Sanji in the Live Action Series One Piece in Spain

The Netflix series One Piece generated debate in Spain because one of its characters, Sanji, was self-dubbed by the actor portraying him in the series, Taz Skylar, with a strong Canarian accent. This caused both negative and positive reactions, the latter pointing out that the rejection was motivated by a case of glotophobia. To understand the reasons behind these responses from the audience, this study analyses, on the one hand, comments on the dubbing posted on the social network X, and on the other, the answers to a questionnaire that traces the profile and positioning of the respondents regarding the dubbing. Results show that negative reactions do not seem to be as widespread as it might seem. Furthermore, they suggest that those rejecting the dubbing do not seem to do so because of the accent, but because of parameters related to the quality of the dubbing (lip-sync, audio quality, etc.).

Explicitation Versus Reduction of Target Text in Audiovisual Voice-Over Translation

The article describes a preliminary study conducted as part of a broader project regarding the phenomenon of explicitation in audiovisual translation. Following a brief theoretical introduction on the determinants of voiceover modality in audiovisual translation and selected issues in the field of explicitation, the article presents the results of an analysis of the explicitation surface manifestations according to the taxonomy proposed by Perego (2003), based on the reasons for its emergence (i.e., as a result of cultural differences, lexicalization of non--verbal content, or the need to reduce the target text). Analysis of the cited examples illustrates the most commonly used techniques enabling text reduction while emphasizing certain content, and answers the research questions posed at the outset, i.e. Does explicitation occur in the voice-over modality of translation despite probable reduction of the text? If it does occur - what are its surface manifestations and which of these are dominant?

Description of the Narrative Comprehension of a Film with Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (SDH)

This paper presents the results of a descriptive study with qualitative data whose objective was to describe the narrative comprehension of a film with subtitles for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing. A comprehension questionnaire was implemented to collect data, based on the narrative schema model proposed by Stein and Glenn (1979). Likewise, a retrospective survey and a demographic and reading habits survey were applied. Six people with different hearing loss participated in the study. Regarding the results, different levels of performance were observed in terms of narrative comprehension. From highest to lowest, the performance level of participants in the categories was: Scene, followed by execution, consequence and/or reaction, internal plan, internal response, and initial event. Likewise, it was observed that there are no difficulties ordering the sequence of episodes.

Shooting the Messenger: Is Translation Quality the Responsibility of the Translator Only?

This paper considers the impact that the quality of the original and the management of the translation assignment can have on the final product. To this end, we must broaden the concept of quality by taking a more holistic approach to the translation process and delimiting the objective and subjective criteria on which the assessment of any given translation is based, describing how these criteria may overlap and cause frictions that will have repercussions on the process. To illustrate the tensions that arise, we present four real-life cases that highlight the common pitfalls that are found during the management of translation projects, potentially limiting translators’ ability to react. The unifying thread of our argument is the idea that quality assurance begins with the quality of the original text and the way in which it conditions the relationships between the actors involved in the process.

Integrating Professional Practice into the Academic Training of Translators and Interpreters

The importance of acquiring both theoretical and practical knowledge linked to professional skills during academic training cannot be overstated. Likewise, this training must be updated and evolve in line with the labour market. With these considerations in mind, our aim is to describe and analyse how the professional subjects taught in the Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpreting in Spain are implemented. To this end, we based our research on an analysis of the content of the teaching guides for subjects related to both the professional environment of translation and interpreting and project management, also relating them to the professional sub-competences that fall within the competence of providing translation services as outlined in the European Master's Degree in Translation offered by the European Commission. The results obtained have allowed us to reflect on the challenges of integrating professional practice into the academic side of our field of knowledge.
