Abstract

Terminology  has  traditionally  placed  special  emphasis  on the  representation of specialized  knowledge  through  the use of terms,  aimed  at their  standardization. Nevertheless,  new  approaches  to  the  field  have  adopted  a  descriptive  perspective, involving  a  wide  variety  of  vehicles  for  knowledge  representation  which  may  be useful for multimedia  terminological  databases.

Illustrations  are  increasingly  regarded  as  a  useful  means  of  representation within the new formats for information encoding which have arisen in the audiovisual scenarios,  involving  the  professional  activity  of  translators,  interpreters,  technical writers and scientific journalists.

In this paper, we argue for a classification of images based on three semiotic and  cognitive  criteria:  iconicity,  abstraction  and  dynamism.  Our  aim  is  to  build  a model for the use of images in scientifi c and technical texts with different levels of specialization, thus stressing the multidimensional nature of concepts.
