In this article we present the results of a qualitative study carried out with a blind or low vision audience in Spain whose purpose is to determine their preferences with respect to two different versions of audio description of cultural references. After briefly reviewing the previous works on cultural references and reception studies in audio description, we will explain the methodology that we have followed (characterization of the sample, corpus, data collection tools) and present the results obtained. The study shows that the Spanish receiver manifests a preference for amplification as an audio description technique when the reference is far from the target culture, while generalization or explicitation is preferred for cultural references that are not important for the plot.
