Abstract

Translation  Memory  Management  Software  is  one  of  the  main  tools  in Computer Assisted Translation  (CAT),  especially  when  handling  highly  repetitive texts.  In  this  paper,  we  analyse  free  software  translation  memory  programs  and propose certain criteria to bear in mind when deciding which particular program to choose. After a brief introduction to the principles which inspire the free software movement and its impact in the field of translation, we describe the criteria by which the reliability of the different free software translation memory programs may be assessed. In accordance with these criteria, we then offer a review of the various programs  available,  focusing  on  their  stability,  maturity  and  capacity  to  provide adequate support for translators.
