This article analyses the Spanish version of the French science popularization documentary L’odysèe de l’espèce (2003). The aim of this analysis is to prove that a “domestication” process has taken place, following Venuti’s terminology (1995), in the translation process. In principle, this may seem a strange practice, given the nature of the text. Nevertheless, the history of audiovisual translation is full of little “manipulations” which, for different reasons, sometimes ideological, sometimes tech- nical, have been introduced in the translation of the text, as well as in the images to which the text acts as a complement. In this case, the reason seems to be to help the audience of the translated version to better recognize the referents, places or people which appear in the documentary.
