The use of English-Spanish code-switching by people of Hispanic origin in the United States has been the subject of studies in several disciplines; however, little has been said from the point of view of Translation Studies, even though the constant presence of two languages intermingled in a text is a feature that poses translation problems and requires the translator to adopt specific translation strategies. In this paper, I will firstly determine the characteristics of English-Spanish code-switching, focusing on its use in the so-called “Latin literature” in the United States. I will then analyze the code-switching present in Junot Díaz’s The brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, as well as the strategies employed in its only Spanish translation to date.
