Abstract

Coinciding with the first 20 years of RELIEVE, this article presents a comparative analysis of the historical milestones of the journal and the worldwide Open Access movement, in order to better frame its evolution. We review some of the principal contributions made in the field of scientific communication during these two decades: the appearance and development of electronic journals, the development of the Open Access movement, the appearance of repositories, the development of platforms to manage articles, new databases, etc.

Remedios Melero, Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology. Spanish Council for Scientific Research

Doctor in chemistry. Senior researcher at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology of The Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). Editor of the journal “Food Science and Technology International” since 1992. She has been a member of the governing council of the European Association of Sciences since 2003. The principle themes of her research in the last years include repositories, electronic publication, evaluation forms, management of electronic publication systems, and open access to scientific publications.
