Abstract

This article attempts to define, insofar as possible, the position of the writer Edgar Allan Poe within the original system as well as outside it, and to make a brief presentation of his poetics, in particular his theory on the short story, his position in the literary tradition, his response to it and the way he transformed it.

The existing concept of translation in Portugal at the time Poe started to be translated is also considered. This is an issue which encompasses many different and even opposing views. In the second half of the 19th century, it is possible to document the activity of translation as both prestigious and secondary in Portuguese culture.

At the same time, the study also addresses the concept of translation that Poe defended as well as his idea of a theory of translation.
