Abstract

The present article carries out the first comparative analysis of two translation proposals into English of the names of rhetorical figures explained in The Arte of English Poesie (1589) and A System of Rhetoric (1733), two English works on rhetoric by George Puttenham and John Stirling, respectively. After discussing the main  features  of  each  book,  as  well  as  the  profile of  their  potential  readers,  the general characteristics displayed by each translation are highlighted. In addition, the article offers a contrastive commentary of specific translations of rhetorical figures common to both works.
