PLUMAS Y VOCES DE LA DOMINACIÓN: REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA ÉPOCA COLONIAL

Abstract

French occupation of Algeria in 1830 marked the beginning of the colonial enterprise carried out by different European countries in the weakest regions of the non-industrialized world. This situation lasted until the mid-20th century and gave rise to different linguistic experiences in the colonies. The development of language poli- cies was conditioned by this historical juncture, and the tasks assigned to translators and interpreters of colonialism were often highly singular. Linguistic intermediaries were also involved in diplomatic missions and espionage, as well as participating in different types of censorship – activities which came to determine the behaviour of the translators and interpreters of colonialism.
