Abstract

This paper deals with the comparative analysis of translated theatrical texts from the point of view of cognitive pragmatics with a special focus on the relevance theory as proposed by Sperber and Wilson and applied to Translation Studies by Gutt.

According to the dichotomy established by Toury at the beginning of the DTS between those models tackling translation previous to its materialization (not necessarily in a normative way) and those models intended to create a theoretical frame for the field, this approach aims to contribute to the latter, by proposing a model of analysis which I have called «equivalent relevance». This model was applied to acorpus of 450 replies belonging to the Romanian play «The Third Stake» by Marin Sorescu and its two translations into English.

This new cognitive perspective of equivalence starting from the psychological principie of communication optimization seems likely to provide a theoretical model of general application that might solve sorne of the problems raised by the multidisciplinary character of translation and subsequent difficulty in adjusting it to a unique analytical frame.
