Main Article Content
Abstract
Chile is a Latin American country that shows the highest percentage of alcohol use disorders in the region. Chilean health policy has instructed to implement brief interventions in primary health to manage hazardous alcohol use, thought there are not studies that have demonstrated their effectiveness. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) emerges as a promising model to manage alcohol abuse in primary health care, because it is brief and consistent with principles of professions such as social work, which gives relevance to self-determination of individuals. In this article we present and illustrate the SFBT model with speeches that show a social worker intervention during a SFBT session. The conversation is oriented towards the exceptions to the problem and towards the person's strengths and resources. Among conclusions, we state the need of empirical and descriptive studies that contribute to strength the knowledge about brief interventions in Chile and Latin America. Besides that, we highlight the need of validation and strengthen of clinical and therapeutic training in social work, in undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
