This study is based on the premise that comparative law is an indispensable tool for legal translation and vice versa; that is to say, the two disciplines feed on each other. In fact, translation plays a fundamental role in transferring legal terms from one legal system to another. Indeed, it is increasingly common to see binding contracts that are mere translations of originals drafted in English, thus originating what we consider to be a hybrid legal genre.
In this article, we analyse how legal experts use English legal vocabulary in their comparative studies. In the process, we derive certain principles which may be applied to specialized legal translation.
