Abstract

This paper deals with issues related to the teaching of legal translation, especially highlighting the need to combine translational, legal and linguistic knowledge with respect to the different legal cultures involved. Comments are made bearing in mind a specific translation commission and a conception of legal translation as a complex activity which  requires from the translator not only deep linguistic knowledge (in terms of grammar and style) but also sufficient knowledge of comparative law. Only by using this multicompetence can the translator avoid transmitting in the target text legal effects which do not accord  with  the legal content of the source text, and/or with the requirements deriving from the specific translation commission.
