This work consists of two parts: first, a quantitative study of the usage of chengyu and second, its influences on three translations of the same original text, namely The Family of Pascual Duarte by Camilo José Cela, first published in 1942. The transla- ted versions in Chinese are: ゃ㠾䝫 • 㧫棎䕓䤓?ㄼ (1973), by ┘㬔偲 (Meiyuan Liu), 㧫䝵䔈?㡞 (1992), by ㇄䁠 喀 (Shuying Chang) and イ㠾 ㄺℭ 䓍 • 㧫棎 䓍䔈 ? ? (1994), by ⻯ⷮ 怔 (Mengchao Tu), ?⺩㉦ (Shangzhi Xu) and 淞㺠 (Min Wei). Our conclusion is that the distance between translated works and target-language text and culture does not necessarily correspond to that between the translated works and their readers.
