LAS TRADUCCIONES DEL RELATO SOBRE EL VIAJE POR EUROPA DEL OBISPO ARMENIO MÁRTIR (1489-1496): TEXTO, PARATEXTOS Y PÚBLICO LECTOR

Abstract

This paper offers a study of aspects of two translations of the account by an Armenian bishop, named Mártir, of a journey he made through Europe at the end of the 15th century. The texts concerned are the French translation by Saint-Martin (1827) and the Spanish translation by Emilia Gayangos de Riaño (1898). More precisely, the paper aims to show the way in which two paratextual elements (prologues and notes), which were added by both translators, provide a deeper knowledge of the original story. Furthermore, these elements are revealing of the way in which both Saint-Martin and Gayangos conceived of their job in translating Mártir’s narrative. Consequently, the paratexts also help to determine the kind of readers the two translators might have had in mind.
