Nowadays, globalization has increased the communication between East and West. Translation is clearly playing a fundamental role in this wave of globalization which is growing at a breakneck pace, and contacts between Spanish speaking and Chinese speaking countries are increasing in frequency. In the field of international trade, Chinese-Spanish commercial correspondence genres are amongst the most translated. A translator’s ignorance of the characteristics of these genres may lead to misunderstandings and even to breakdowns in communication. The aim of this research is to study and compare the politeness strategies used in Chinese and Span- ish commercial correspondence and to use the results to provide guidelines for the translation of these genres from Chinese into Spanish and from Spanish into Chinese.
