TRANSLATING BRAZILIAN LITERATURE: TREASON, IMPOSSIBILITY OR MIRACLE. INSIGHTS INTO THE RECEPTION OF BRAZILIAN LITERATURE IN SPAIN

Abstract

The number of translations of Brazilian literature in Spain is still too small compared with other literatures. Except for Jorge Amado, and, above all, Paulo Coelho, Brazilian writers are little known in our country. Analyzing the reasons of this invisibility, we consider several variables such as the difficulty of translating into Spanish the exoticism and subtleties of Brazilian literary language, the absence of a policy of cultural exportation in Brazil and the little space devoted to promote Brazilian literature in Spain. Through N.lida Pi.on’s and Guimar.es Rosa’s view on translation, we revise some aspects of the translation from Brazilian Portuguese into Spanish. As well as presenting the cartography of Brazilian literature in Spain, we deal with the current measures adopted in Brazil and in Spain in order to develop specific policies aimed to support and spread Brazilian culture and literature.
