About Theatre Retranslation: In Search of a (Re)definition

While the last two decades have seen significant progress in studies on literary retranslation, with proposed definitions and exploration of prompting factors, a noticeable gap exists in reflections on this phenomenon within theatrical translation. This gap extends to an examination of the textual and non-textual factors influencing the translation and staging of works previously translated (and probably performed) in a specific target culture.
This article theoretically investigates both the verbal —linguistic, translational— and non-verbal —-commercial, personal, ideological, performative— elements that influence the retranslation and reception of a particular play. The analysis underscores the necessity of formulating a definition of theatrical retranslation as distinct from literary retranslation that accounts for the unique peculiarities inherent in the dramatic genre.
