Abstract

Predilection for either foreignizing or domestication is legitimate provided that, from a functionalist point of view, it suits the pursued purpose. In humorous audiovisual texts, comicalness may be seen as a top priority skopos. My research, however, suggests that in both methods it seems convenient to avoid going beyond certain limits, which could have a boomerang effect. Hence, I do not always support that, intranslation, the end justifies the means since, sometimes, the means are the ones that adulterate the end. From this standpoint, and from an American-Spanish intercultural view mainly focusing on cultural references, I reflect on those límits (mainly inthe case of domestication) and on some other related issues, with allusions to three American TV sitcoms televised in Spain. As a general conclusion I would indicate that, while it may also occur with foreignizing, the search for functional equivalence may lead to the adoption of domesticating solutions, at least microtextually. That willnot always mean a vouch for success, particularly if the limits are transcended, sothe manipulation of a text should not be carried out in an arbitrary way.
