The educational potential of video games in the deconstruction of hegemonic masculinity through the VIGLIAM method (Video Games Literacy From Alternative Masculinities)

Résumé

Generally, male video game characters represent a hegemonic masculinity based on a patriarchal system that shows as a protagonist and dominant a white, western, heterosexual, wealthy male, disabled man and anti-ecologist.  Videogames are one of the most consumed entertainment industry products worldwide. For students, video games are spaces where to find their masculine identity. Therefore, education must include video games. Video games are used as an educational resource for the improvement of the teaching-learning process of students. However, the aim of this study is to propose a didactic method untitled VIGLIAM (acronym for Video Games Literacy from Alternative Masculinities). From this method, firstly, students deconstruct critically the hegemonic masculinity of the characters in video games. Secondly, students build critically and creatively alternative masculinities that promote a fairer and more equal society. From this way, students develop empowering and empathetic skills from categories as gender, race, class, sexual orientation, body and nature. In short, this research is part of masculinities studies in the area of education and it is fundamental in the light of the emergence of posmachism that arises given the possibility of the loss of male privilege.

Laura Triviño Cabrera, Universidad de Málaga

Laura Triviño Cabrera is a professor of the University of Málaga. She is the coordinator of the Didactic for Social Sciences area and has a Ph.D. in art history after graduating in Humanities, Philosophy, Social and Cultural Anthropology and Art History. She won the first national prize of graduates in Humanities from the Ministry of Education and Science and is the winner of the Elisa Pérez Vera gender research prize from the UNED. Investigation stances are held at the Université Paris 8, the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Universidade do Minho. Current leader of the R&D excellence project titled ‘Research Project reference LIMEC (Multimodal Literacy and Cultural Studies)’, funded by the Vicerector’s Investigation Office from Malaga University, and the educational innovation research project titled ‘Audiovisual Literacy for performative practice reference PIE 17-172, funded by the Vicerector’s for Teaching and Academic Organization Office from Malaga University.

Alejandro Muñoz-Guerado, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Alejandro Muñoz-Guerado has a Ph.D. from the University Complutense of Madrid and is currently working on his thesis on the influence of post-sexism in game spaces and its effects on widening the second digital divide for women. He graduated in History at the Universidad de Málaga and has an MA in Teaching from the Universidad de Málaga.

Asunción Bernárdez-Rodal, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Asunción Bernádez Rodal. Full Professor and Director of the Feminist Research Institute of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). Professor of gender and communication, the semiotics of mass media and information and information theory at the School of Information Sciences. Former coordinator of the PhD programme in Feminist studies and gender and the MA programme in Feminist studies, both of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). Member of the Expert Committee for gender-based violence in the media of the Ministry of Equality. PhD degree in Journalism and BA degree in Spanish Philology from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). Current leader of the R&D excellence project titled “Cultural produsage in social networks: industry, popular consumption and audiovisual literacy of Spanish youth with gender perspective”; and the Santander Bank-UCM project titled “Digital divide between university teachers and students: production and cultural consumption through social networks (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram)”. Author of numerous international high-impact research works related to the analysis of gender discourses, both textual and audiovisual. Author of the book Mujeres en medio(s): Propuestas para analizar la comunicación masiva con perspectiva de género (“Women in the media: proposals to analyse mass media with a gender perspective”) (Editorial Fundamentos, 2015), and Violencia de género y sociedad: una cuestión de poder (“Gender violence and society: a question of power”) and Don Quijote, el lector por excelencia (“Don Quixote, the reader par excellence”).
