Abstract

Lately, teaching in higher education has been determined by social changes caused by globalisation processes, the impact of Information and Communication Technologies, and the generation of knowledge as an axis for economic development. In line with social transformation, teaching in higher education has been subjected to quality control policies that have impacted on the academic path of teaching staff. These have become one of the prime factors for quality improvement of the system itself, that has generated mechanisms for the assessment and accreditation of their teaching competence.

The current article aims at discussing the quality control factors for teaching competence at the university, taking a comparative perspective between Portugal and Spain, two countries with historical and cultural connections, both in Europe and in Latin America. The results evidence discrepancies, but it seems an assessment model that shares the core and its goals.
