Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the sapphic elements in the Marina Tsvetaeva’s work from a literary theory perspective, focusing on the theme of sapphic desire and the motives attached to its different forms. To do so, we will deepen on the matter through the study of the poem collection Girlfriend, the Letter to the Amazon and Sonechka’s Tale. These works represent three different ways of formalising the sapphic relations and consequently operate with different machanisms. This form divergence affects the presence and evolution of the various motives associated with the theme. Thus, they operate through different mechanisms the presence and evolution of the various motives associated with the theme, such as the youngest-eldest roles in sapphic love, the erotic conception of desire or the gestural importance of hands.
