Abstract
Our frst aim is to undertake an hermeneutic intersection between contemporary autobiographical literature and Rubén Darío’s poetry of the end of century (fin-de-siècle). Thereafter, we will examine the fctional character of the “self ” as an exegetical category that enables a direct access, not only to the individuated construction of the bard’s rare sensitivity, but mainly to the aesthetic experience of similar attitudes accompanying him and constitute what we propose to denominate as an “aesthetic of the foreign”. Lastly, we will depurate the sedimentations of the modelled image of the artist as dandy and the traces of poetic consciousness –to which the two autobiographies bear clear and evident testimony– allowing not only to consider the variations and modalizations of a self-portrait, but also to assess, as a possible exegetical category of Spanish-American modernism, the “foreign” as a symbol.
