Abstract
The short stories collected in Del cielo y del escombro illustrate Serrano Plaja’s change of heart with regard to the historical events of the Thirties. We studies the political, aesthetic, and existential trajectory of this author, whose literary purpose it was to create a form of art which would eschew both the playfulness of art for art’s sake and the heavy-handedness of propaganda. This trajectory, however, culminates in failure, as the project of a redeeming humanism is revealed to be impossible: ultimately, the stories renounces all kinds of idealization to embrace nihilism, thus prefiguring the themes of Plaja’s poems of exile.
