The use of literary texts in the foreign language classroom is not so common in Spain. This paper puts forward a decalogue of the potential advantages of literary texts when it comes to learning English. The chosen text, Sue Townsend’s The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 133/4, has been a best seller and, due to its style and the topics dealt with, turns out to be very successful among students. The article also presents a number of activities to be implemented in class in the last years of secondary education or in Baccalaureate.
