Le virage picaresque dans la renaissance du roman social espagnol
Abstract
Une expérience républicaine au bilan mitigé (1931-1936) prend brutalement fin en Espagne après cinq ans de tension continue. S’en suit une guerre civile (1936-1939) qui liquide le roman social pour laisser la place à une manifestation moderne du roman de chevalerie grâce à des écrivains nationalistes passionnés au service du franquisme (1939-1975). Dans la dynamique de ce retour aux sources littéraires, le roman de chevalerie ayant fait les beaux jours des lettres hispaniques au xvie siècle avant d’être supplanté au xviie par le roman picaresque, les toutes premières dissensions au sein de la Génération 40 font appel à l’esprit du picaro exemplaire. On passera alors d’un picarisme de la terreur ou de la misère morale caractérisé par une apocalypsisation délibérée de la matière sociale à un picarisme des classes sociales ou des masses qui substituera la critique à la terreur et au sordide.
