This article gives a description and analysis of the scenography devised in 1974 by
Teatro del Mediodía, an independent theatre company based in Seville, for a drama developed
from texts by Cervantes and other authors of entremés. It goes on to explore the relationship
between the drama and the stylistic and aesthetic decisions that were made, based on the type
of theatrical performance inspired by the Golden Age of arts and literature in Spain. The
staging uses as its references companies of itinerant comedians and the text of La elección de
los alcaldes de Daganzo by Cervantes. The historical references and the dramatic literary
material and provide one approach, to the local councils, exposing their politicians as corrupt
and inept, in the death rattle of the Franco dictatorship.
