La traducción de Irlanda: <em>Popular Tales</em> (1804) de Maria Edgeworth en francés

Resumen

Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849) fue la escritora angloirlandesa más popular del siglo diecinueve. Famosa por su ingenio y vena pedagógica, Edgeworth produjo un prolífico corpus de ensayos, trabajos educativos y novelas feminocéntricas, la mayoría de las cuales fueron traducidas en el continente. Este artículo analiza la representación de Irlanda en dos versiones al francés de una de las historias de Popular Tales (1804) teniendo en cuenta que Francia se veía como una cultura superior y que Irlanda suponía un territorio exótico para los lectores europeos. Tras una contextualización de cada traducción, nos fijaremos en la comparación con el texto tal y como se publicó en Gran Bretaña. Tanto la traducción de los Pictet como la de Bertin suponen alteraciones importantes porque presentan un mundo refinado y eliminan elementos que podrían chocar a los lectores. Como consecuencia, la recepción de Edgeworth en los países francófonos difiere de la obtenida en Gran Bretaña.
