The special situation of vulnerability of the LGTBI collective seeking international protection in the city of Melilla

Abstract

When we talk about asylum and refuge on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) in the city of Melilla, we allude to a phenomenon contextualized by four realities that influence as determining factors:

1. The reality of international protection within the migratory phenomenon.
2. The very vulnerability of the LGTBI collective in society as a whole.
3. The specificity of asylum from the procedural point of view and the reception system in Melilla.
4. The specificity of particularly vulnerable groups within the phenomenon of asylum and refuge.

Another factor to take into account is how the pandemic has specifically affected the group of LGBTI asylum-seeking migrants in Melilla during these two years (Washington Blade, 2020).
