Abstract

The text shows part of the research carried out in the context of adoctoral thesis that studies the contributions of Paulo Freire’s pedagogyto intercultural education. The purpose of the article is to know theperceptions of teachers, students and families around cultural diversity. From the methodological point of view we opted for a qualitative methodology, completed with a case study of ethnographic orientationcarried out in an IES in Asturias. Teachers alluded to the existenceof factors that greatly impede the task of educating in multiculturalcontexts. They point out, among others, the lack of flexibility in theeducational system, the teaching tradition, the need to comply withthe curriculum, the poor support of the educational administration. Thestudents - foreign and native - show little knowledge of the culturespresent in the classrooms and, at the same time, demonstrate throughcomments that the previous knowledge they have of other cultures areusually formulated on the basis of stereotypes. On the other hand, theeducational community, recognize that the multicultural context, despitethe difficulties, represents a very important positive factor since it isideal for promoting cultural exchange. However, the results show that thecultural diversity that houses the center has not served to that effect.
