The article analyses the transformation process of the image of the cultural other in relation to Latin American and Spanish intellectuals during the Spanish Civil War. This new configuration of the cultural imaginary, which in that period is linked to political positioning, is also the result of the cultural history of transatlantic relations in the cultural field. For this reason, the article examines two historical moments of the cultural imaginary (in the 19th and the early 20th century) and studies key factors in the new image of the intellectual and his or her others. The idea of a cultural space able to transcend national frontiers and the image of Madrid at war as a pole of rebinding are central in the new configuration of the intellectual’s image.Downloads
