Abstract

In many languages the word "woman" also denotes "wife". That is just the thing in Spanish language, ancient Greek, modem Greek, German language, Swedish and Italian language, for instance. In ancient Greek the vocable γυνή has both senses, "woman" and "wife", and, sometimes, in ambiguous uses, denotes the two meanings at the same time. On this equivoke Euripides bases an ingenious group of calambours in the tragedy "Alcestis" (lines 531, 1020, 1034 and 1 087).
