Based on the epigraphy of Hispania, a study is carried out on the labor and economic activity of the private freedmen, for which a division has been established according to the place where it was developed and its typology. In addition, an assessment is made of their general quantitative and qualitative impact in the Peninsula, taking into account their social relations (as far as these can be determined). Likewise, at the end, it is also offered a proposal of organization of the trades and labor activity for this social group.

Philo of Alexandria: Personal, Family and Social Context of the philosopher

The Jewish philosopher Philo of Alexandria is known for the extensive work he has left us. However, very little is known about his personal life, except for the episode of his embassy to Caligula in his treatise Legatio ad Gaium. In fact, he hardly speaks about himself in his writings, and he mainly refers to his philosophical, religious or intellectual experiences instead of his daily life. We just have a little more information about some relatives and the high social and economic position they had in Alexandria. In this article, we intend to get closer to his personal figure and to the family and social reality that surrounded him. Thus, we will present the aspects of his biography that we have been able to find out, as well as the most relevant members of his complex family, all of this should be framed in the historical circumstances of a difficult period for the numerous, prosperous and cultured Alexandrian Jewish community.

Kairos: Intersections Beetween Medicine and Greek-Figured Vases (VI-V BC)

The guiding question for this study is the following: Why are Achilles’ figurations in Greek pots important for the history of medicine? To answer this question, a reflection on the myth of Psyche is provided, and the coherence arising from the confluence of the materials under examination is considered within the contex of poiesis, iatria, mythological and rational thinking. This content is salient in Empedocles, in whom such questions are particularly relevant for the definition of ethical acts as symptomatologies of the psyche, which is configured through the body in the depictions. By focusing on ethical fury, menis, it will be observed how the figuration of the body mirrors struggles of the soul, indicates the double and the evanescent manifestations of this conception, within the VI-V BC, where new perspectives regarding the human being and the cosmos were central to ancient thinkers and iatroi. As men in wonder at themselves and the cosmos of which they formed part, they observed everything, inferred and reasoned, thus contributing to shaping the landscape of rationality and memory through a sensory and integrating perspective. In this wise, a reflection on the role of Priam as ana-lyst of the psyche is presented. The reception of the embassy of Agamemnon, the ransom of the body of Hector, and the teichoscopy (Iliad 3; 9; 24) will foreground mutually significant homologies with the figurations, and the myth of Psyche.

The fetiales were Rome's first diplomatic institution, with the primary objective of preventing violent conflicts and justifying war against other communities. Comprising a body of priests and an intricate system of religious legislation and rituals, they fulfilled their duties with precision. Traditionally, their activities were thought to be confined to the monarchical era. However, through reexamination of classical sources and analysis of high imperial epigraphy using novel approaches, it becomes evident that the Feciales persisted throughout the Republic and the Empire, adapting to the evolving circumstances.

Carneades' Role in Cicero's Conceptualisation of Justice

Much research has gone into reconstructing and analysing Laelius’ and Philus’ speeches for and against justice as featuring in Cicero’s De re publica book III. However, there has not yet been a systematic discussion of the significance which Carneades, the Carneadean method and the divisio Carneadea play not only in this exchange but also in Cicero’s conceptualisation of justice as a whole. By examining Cicero’s style of composition and argumentation, the aim of this article is to show that Cicero’s reference to Carneades as the figure behind Philus’ arguments in favour of injustice is neither coincidental nor purely for the purpose of rhetorical effect, but a crucial and strategic move on Cicero’s part which helps him shape his own argument of justice throughout his works.

The term palaístra appears 52 times in Galen. The doctor gives us a lot of information. I will highlight some essential points: 1. Galen tells us about the only emperor (Marcus Aurelius) who was fond of the palaestra, indicating when he went to it and what he did there; 2. He censorships how athletes exhibited their strength in the palaestra, and also highlights the excess weight in some of them due to their unbalanced diet based on a lot of meat; 3. He notes that the athletes' fights could be carried out well in the palaestra or in a place where there was fairly deep dust. He stops at several of the holds that the fighters made with their arms and legs. He adds different considerations about how he treated several seriously injured people in the palaestra. He mentions the “specialists in the foreground” as well as the risks to which excessive physical exercises led; 4. He stops at the frictions given in the palaestra; 5. He tells us about halteres and their relevance in some gymnastic exercises typical of the palaestra. 6. He alludes to various actions of meirákioi, “boys” (the singular refers to an age between 18 and 25 years) and neanískoi, “young men” (the singular refers to those between 25 and 35 years old) in relation to the palaestra; 7. He talks about the presence of paîdes ("children", whose age ranges from newborn to 18 years old) in the aforementioned, mentioning various accidents suffered. He stops at how children were trained to climb a rope to gain strength; 8. Regarding an epileptic child, he recommends the drug that should be taken every day before going to the palaestra; 9. The sweat from those who do physical exercises mixed with the dirt of the palaestra was effective for the dispersion of tumors contrary to nature.

Insueto splendet igne: Princely Virtues and Some Philological Notes to Three Epitaphs by Francisco Sánchez de las Brozas

The following article presents a study of three epitaphs composed by Francisco Sánchez de las Brozas. A methodology of analysis is applied to these epitaphs, focusing on the examination of princely virtues and their integration into Brocense's portrayals of royal figures. To achieve this, the pedagogy of humanistic virtues takes precedence in the initial exploration. Subsequently, an edition of the epitaphs is provided, accompanied by philological commentary sourced from both contemporary editions during the author's time and later editions. This philological commentary is coupled with a content analysis, elucidating the impact of humanistic virtues' pedagogy on the formulation of the verses. As a result, the article concludes with an assessment of Brocense's work from the vantage point of studying humanistic moral pedagogy.

The Vita sancti Aemiliani of Braulio of Saragossa Between Visigothic Hagiographies: About the Exceptional Nature of His Miracles

This paper wants to highlight the position of the Vita Sancti Aemiliani within the group of Visigothic hagiographies. When comparing this Vita Sancti with the Vita Sancti Desiderii, the Vitas Sanctorum Patrum Emeretensium and the Vita Sancti Fructuosi, it is verified that, although there are common points that suggest a typified structure, the hagiography written by Braulio of Saragossa stands out in some aspects. In this paper, we analyse one of those aspects, the exceptional and rigorous treatment of miracles.
