Abstract

This paper provides a comparison of the semantics of the Bulgarian verb chodja and the Russian chodit’ (with the reference to the corresponding Italian verbs). First, we give an overview of the semantics of the Old Slavonic verb choditi in order to outline those components of the etymon’s meaning, which are preserved in the two derivatives, and the ones that have emerged as a result of the evolution of the two modern Slavic languages. Both chodit’ and chodja are analyzed from the perspective of motion directionality. Furthermore, given the fact that the realization of certain meanings of chodja and chodit’ depends on the tense of the verb form, we examine the distribution of these meanings, single unidirectional movement in particular, with respect to various temporal plans.
