Abstract

The basic principles of artistic translation theory came to be established in Russia and Ukraine in the mid 20th century. In Ukraine, the founders of artistic translation include such names as Igor Kachurovskiy, Grygoriy Kóchur, Mykola Lukash, Boris Oleksándriv and Oleksándr Fínkel. Although it is often supposed that translation between closely related languages is far easier than translation between distant languages, in reality this is not the case. Very often, translation between close languages is more complicated owing to the fact that the same words, for example in Russian and Ukrainian, may have a different – and sometimes opposite – meaning.
