Argentine writer Julio Cortázar (1914-1984), in Hopscotch, his summit work, introduced the concept of the engaged reader, which together with the playful purpose of the novel itself, revolutionized the literary scene of the 1960s when it was published, long before studies about “receiving artwork” were commonplace. The genesis of the concept of the engaged reader is the discovery of others, the other as a human being, which is reflected in the story "The Pursuer". From a biographical point of view, an early disappointment experienced by Cortázar as a young writer contributes to the idea that creativity reflected in artwork operates as exorcism to frustrations and traumas of childhood.Downloads
