De las coquetas (1899) reveals a crisis as well as the articulation —with conservative sensibility— of Máximo Soto Hall’s thinking (Guatemala, 1871-1943), an organic intelectual of Central American Liberalism. This work, not considered as part of the literay canon, was published in San José (Costa Rica) the same year as the memorable novel El problema (The Problem), a political dystopia reflecting on the contradictions of the oligarchical national project. Although completely forgotten by the critics, since El problema concentrated the attention of the scholars, in this article these works are considered as the two sides of a single discourse, progressive as well as tradicionalist, about the changes that risked the moral force and the Central American nations formation. For this purpose, the medical and disease metaphores constructed by Soto Hall are analyzed as the basis of the literary representation of modern women’s rise.
