Around 1880, a photography studio in Buenos Aires produced a catalogue containing samples of the cartes-de-visite for sale in the locale. The first image of this book is a copy of a painted miniature of Juan Manuel de Rosas, the former leader of the Argentine Confederation (1829-1852). The conspicuous inclusion of his portrait is surprising, as it defies the exclusion of Rosas from the liberal historiography that the ruling elite of the moment were fiercely promoting. Carefully examining this little studied artifact sheds light on how the practices of consuming, collecting, and exhibiting mass-produced photographic images permitted the articulation of conservative sensibilities. By means of the unspoken and the senses, the visual culture of everyday life made it possible to conceive of an organicist vision of society in times of convulsive modernization.
