The Censorial Disposition: The Two Lives of Fernández de Lizardi and the Conservative Sensibilities of Mexico

The narrative work of José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi (1776-1827) experienced a renewed publishing boom in the Mexico of the 1830s, in the midst of a decade characterized by a Thermidorian reaction that sought to contain the popular and republican “excesses” seen during the first years of independent life. Re-edited in a new context, the positions and sensitivities of Fernández de Lizardi’s novels lost their rebellious character and echoed anti-liberal forces committed to the suppression of the popular in the name of the civic well-being of the nation. This essay offers a retrospective reading of the two lives of the so-called Pensador Mexicano to show how central to both was what could be called the “censorial disposition”. The essay proposes that the late work and “censorial disposition” of Fernández de Lizardi played a foundational role in the articulation of later conservative sensibilities in Mexico.
