Abstract

This study approaches a linguistic analysis of Cuentos Inverosímiles by José López Rubio, a
book including twenty-one histories published in 1924. After examining the neologisms, the borrowings
and the colloquial language used by the author, one can affirm that in the work there is an intentional
contrast between the inverosímiles contents and the way the author represents them, fluctuating between
real and unreal expression. This contrast produces a special humour, the same that López Rubio
expressed in his later plays and in his life.
