Lope de Vega y el poder monárquico: una puesta al día

Resumen

RESUMEN: El trabajo intenta trazar el estado de la cuestión crítica sobre la relación de Lope de Vega
con el poder monárquico. Tras unos estudios pioneros que se habían fijado únicamente en la teoría
política presente en los textos, los investigadores han empezado a estudiar su teatro de tema histórico
poniéndolo en relación con su construcción de la mitología del imperio español, si bien sólo en un
segundo momento algunos se han percatado de que dicha glorificación de la monarquía habsbúrgica y de
la nobleza coetánea se vincula a las personales estrategias de autopromoción del poeta, deseoso de
conseguir un cargo oficial en la corte. Por el contrario, algunos estudiosos, sobre todo de área
anglosajona, se han empeñado en leer la escritura de Lope en clave crítica y hasta satírica, prescindiendo
de la necesaria contextualización de su teatro. La teoría de la recepción permite echar nueva luz sobre esta
controvertida cuestión sólo si es capaz de armonizar oportunamente el contexto histórico-cultural del
autor con el horizonte de expectativas del público coetáneo.

ABSTRACT: The essay tries to outline the ‘state-of-the-art’ about the relationship between Lope de
Vega and the contemporary monarchic power. After some early studies merely concerning the political
theory present inside the texts, the scholars have started to analyze his historical theater in relation with
his construction of the Spanish Impire mythology, even if only recently some of them have realized that
this glorification of both the Austrias and the Spanish nobles gets on with Lope’s self-promotion
strategies, in order to obtain an official post at court. On the contrary, some scholars, mainly
Anglosaxon, have tried to interpret his works in a critical and satyrical perspective, without considering
the necessary contextualization of his theater. The reception theory may help studying this controversial
matter, only if it tries to match in the right way both the historical and cultural context of the author
and the cultural background of the contemporary audience.
