Abstract

The encyclopaedist Isidore of Seville (b. 560 -d. 636) is a point of connection between the ancient and medieval worlds. In the twenty books that comprise his Etymologies, he tries to compile the knowledge of his time. In the third book, he points out the difference between the concepts of Astronomy and Astrology and also distinguishes two fields within Astrology: the first one, which he defines as superstitiosa, is somewhat similar to the present meaning of Astrology; the second is something like a practical application of astronomical knowledge to everyday life.
