Abstract

Cícero has been regarded by the historiographical tradition as a clear representative and advocate of the Roman imperialistic practices of conquest and extorsion. This is true but only to a certain extent. Such a view, together with the stereotypical conception of the pax romana, has prevented the recognition of attitudes in Cícero and others towards peace, conflict resolution, negotiation and defusion which were clearly present amongst citizens, and in the relations of the empire with foreign powers. By studying the uses of the noun pax-pacis, the present paper attempts to shed light on Cicero's thoughts on this issue.
