Keywords:

Peregrinus Proteus' suicide has traditionally been used as one of the most solid proofs that cynicism developed strong religious inclinations over the course of the Imperial period. This article intends to demonstrate that Peregrinus' motivation and behaviour throughout the episode is perfectly understandable within the former cynical tradition. Peregrinus' unprecedent action is simply an attempt to adapt the old messages to new demands, especially to competition from the new models of askesis.
